Signing of Exchange of Notes and Grant Agreement For Japanese Grant Project for Introduction of Clean Energy by Solar Electricity Generating System

  1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend to the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic a grant assistance totalling up to \560 million yen (about US$ 6 million) for the project for Introduction of Clean Energy by Solar Electricity Generation System. H.E Mr. Masaki KUNIEDA, Ambassador of Japan to the Syrian Arab Republic, and H.E Dr. Amer LUTFI, Head of State Planning Commission will sign the Exchange of Notes for the Project at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the State Planning Commission in Damascus.
    On the same occasion, the Grant Agreement of the Project will be also signed between H.E Dr. Ahmad Qussai KAYALI, Minister of Electricity, and Ms Akiko TOMITA, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Syria office.


  2. The gist of the project is as follows

  3. (1) Outline of the Project
    Under the project, approximately number of 200 solar street lighting system covering the solar panel (for generating the electricity), lump, battery (for storing the generated electricity) and pole, will be procured and installed on the highway between Damascus and Jordanian border. Herjellah, Der Ali and Jbab areas; 20 to 30km south from Damascus city centre are exact locations for installation.
    The project will be completed by the end of 2010.

    (2) Effectiveness of the Project
    Under the project, the following effects are expected to appear;

    1) The street lighting system is installed to the areas of heavy traffic with high danger of traffic accidents. After the installation of street lighting system by this project, traffic safety of the areas will be improved.

    2) This solar street lighting system is operated only by photovoltaic energy.This system will contribute to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel and emission of green house gas.

  4. The Government of Japan sincerely hopes that the procured and installed solar street lighting system under the grant project will be utilized efficiently to improve the traffic without green house gas emission through using clean energy.
